HATTORI HANZO
First izakaya restaurant in Spain

Hattori Hanzo
Hattori Hanzo is widely recognised as the first izakaya to open in Spain, introducing Japanese tavern culture to a local audience when it was still largely unknown. Conceived as an informal, urban space, the restaurant brought together small plates, quality ingredients and a lively atmosphere, translating the everyday spirit of Japanese dining into an authentic and accessible experience.
Context
Hattori Hanzo opened as the first izakaya in Spain, introducing Japanese tavern culture to a market where it was largely unknown. Conceived as an informal, urban space, the project sought to translate the everyday rhythms of Japanese dining into a local context without formalisation or spectacle.
Objective
To establish a credible and accessible expression of izakaya culture, maintaining authenticity while making it legible and appealing to a Spanish audience unfamiliar with the format.
Challenges
Introducing a new dining model without relying on stereotypes or dilution. Balancing informality and quality in both food and atmosphere. Adapting Japanese dining codes to local habits while preserving their spirit.
Outcome
A distinctive, long-standing concept (+10 years) that helped define the izakaya category in Spain, setting a reference point for informal Japanese dining and opening the door for similar projects to follow.
